Pinehurst is a village in Moore County, North Carolina. The village began with the purchase of 500 acres in 1895 by James Walker Tufts, and eventually an additional 5,500 acres in the North Carolina Sandhills. James Tufts’ vision was to build a “health resort for people of modest means”. Originally named Tuftstown during the development, Tuftstown became the Village of Pinehurst and home to Pinehurst Resort. In 1980, the village became a municipality. Today, the village covers an area of 17.2 square miles and is home to a little over 13,000 people.
